The Circulatory System

We are learning now about the circulatory system. It is responsible for the distribution of the nutrients provided by the digestive system and the oxygen we get through the respiratory system. All of our body systems work together to keep us alive!!! Our body is just amazing!

Watch a video which shows how our heart works. Everything starts on the right side of the heart, blood coming from all the body gets into the right chambers of the heart. This blood has CARBON DIOXIDE, a waste product.

The job of your heart is to pump blood through your body. Even in your sleep, your heart keeps beating, or pumping blood. If it stopped, you would quickly die. Your heart is divided into two sides separated by a septum. The left side of your heart is filled with oxygen-rich blood, while the right side of your heart is filled with oxygen-poor blood. Each side of your heart is further broken into two chambers known as the atrium and the ventricle. Each side of the heart has an atrium and a ventricle for a total of four chambers.

Project: Make a Model of a Lung

The objective of this project is to have a clearer idea of what is the role of the diaphragm (dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of the lungs) as we inhale and exhale.

 

As we inhale, this muscle contracts, it is pushed down as the air fills in our lungs. As we exhale, the muscle relaxes, it moves upwards as air gets out of our lungs.

Watch this video, make your model and observe what happens as you pull down the balloon.

In your Science notebook, make a drawing of your observation and explain what happened.
