Present Continuous and Simple Present Practice

Hello everyone!

Remember that we are having a Language test on February 25th. and it is important that you practice using verb tenses -present continuous and simple present- as much as you can.

Present continuous tense is used to talk about actions in process in the present time, you talk about what you are doing in that moment. To form the present continuous you need (AM, IS, or ARE) +(ACTION VERB+ING). Here is a game to practice adding ING to some action verbs. You need to follow some spelling rules:

  1. Usually add "ing" to verbs: Play - playing; study- studying
  2. When a verb ends in silent "e", drop the "e" and add "ing": drive - driving; come - coming; take - taking.
  3. If a verb ends in consonant+vowel+consonant, double the last consonant: swim - swimming; dig - digging; put - putting; cut - cutting.

Remember! You need to open a Word document to record the results of all the exercises! Save your document with your names.

1. Now, try changing some verbs to the "ing" form by clicking on the letters. You need to spell the verbs correctly as fast as possible:

2. Complete the sentences correctly in the positive or affirmative form:
example: "He is playing guitar"

3. Now, play the same game to form negative sentences:

http://www.anglomaniacy.pl/grammarHelpers19.htm

4. And finally, try making questions. Remember that the only thing you have to do is to move the "helping verb" (am, is, are) to the beginning of the sentence.

5. Now, complete the text using present continuous:

6. Here is some practice to complete sentences in the negative form (you will need to use the short form: isn't, aren't):

7. Then, practice changing sentences to question form:

8. And I am sure you will be able to escape the "HANGMAN"

http://eslgamesworld.com/members/games/grammar/present%20tenses/present%20progressive%20hangman.html

9. Play "Snakes and Ladders". You will need to choose the correct form of the verb to complete sentences in simple present or present continuous form. Can you do it?

http://eslgamesworld.com/members/games/grammar/present%20tenses/present%20tenses%20snakes%20and%20ladders.html

 10. Complete the sentences in the simple present tense. Remember you need to add "s" or "es" to the verb if the subject is He, She, or It.

Don't forget to register your results in a Word document!

Language Exam Study Guide

Remember that our first bimestrial exam will be Language on Thursday, December 13th. It is very important that you check your notebook exercises too.
1. Adjectives: You need to be able to identify "quality" and "quantity" adjectives. Remember they are words that describe nouns, so they are placed before nouns.
Adjectives are words that tell: opinion (beautiful); size (large, small); age (old, young); shape: (round, square); temperature (cold, warm); colors (red, white); material (plastic, wooden); purpose (running, swimming, tennis, football). For example:

I have some new, orange, cotton, tennis shoes. (I am using four adjectives to describe the shoes).

Here is a link to a worksheet to practice identifying adjectives:

http://havefunteaching.com/worksheets/language/adjective/adjective-worksheet-2.pdf

Check the activities and games on this page:

http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/interactive/literacy2.htm#adj

2. Simple Present Tense. Remember the simple present tense is used to describe facts and habitual or routinary actions. Describe your daily activities or facts about nature or other topics.

Here is a game to practice using the correct form of the verb in simple present, remember you have to add "s" or "es" when the subject is he, she, it or a singular noun. How fast are you to click on the right form when it appears, (I am not good at it!)

http://www.eslkidsworld.com/Interactive%20games/present%20simple%20tense%20quiz.html

See if you can do this test, to make the negative form of simple present use don't or doesn't and the simple form of verb (run, write, smile, etc.) It is very important that you follow the instructions:
 http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/tests/simple-present-1

 http://a4esl.org/q/h/lb/psv.html

Check how good you are making questions:

 http://www.englishexercises.org/makeagame/viewgame.asp?id=3013

You also need to practice your Reading Comprehension skills like compare and contrast. Remember that when you compare, you find how things are similar and when you contrast, you tell how they are different.

For practice, try solving these worksheets, you can check your answers at the end:

You may also try doing this one:

Vocabulary words and spelling. Remember you need to know the vocabulary words in your notebook and the spelling words with long "e" sound like "beam, thief, reef" etc.

Good luck!
