MOUNT ST. HELENS ERUPTION

Watch a video about the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in the United States. Describe some of the effects this disaster had on the surrounding ecosystems. Do you think it affected landforms? How?

Watch another video showing how this area looked 30 years after the disaster (2010), compare what you see with the previous video, how has it changed? How have landforms changed? How is the ecosystem different now?

Now, watch the following video which shows how weathering changes landforms overtime. Water, wind, ice, etc. cause changes on rocks which eventually change their forms and sometimes their chemical composition, they become something different!! Watch carefully how it happens:

SCIENTIFIC METHOD AND SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT RESOURCES

We are all curious and excited about the Science Fair and the experiments that will be presented. Well, let me tell you that during the week of March 26 you will be presenting your experiments in the classroom. We will consider that the Scientific Method is applied in your experiment and you should prepare part of your presentation in English and part in Spanish, you decide which parts and who is presenting what.

Also we will grade your skills to work as a team, your organization and ability to work together sharing ideas and solving problems. Don't forget that each one of you has talents and those are the ones you need to put to work in your team.

I have spent sometime looking for material that can help you understand better what you have to do. First, here are some links to internet sites that will give you the opportunity to test your knowledge on the scientific method.

1. These pages contain an activity to practice putting in order the steps of the scientific method.

2. Go through the story on the discovery of the cure to a strange disease known as "pellagra" using the scientific method.

There are some videos that can help you go through experiments and the way you should work in a laboratory, there is also information about the scientific method. For example:

In this video you can see an example of the way an experiment is designed:

And this one describes a Science Fair project.

There are also a variety of resources in the following page, you can find power point presentations, games and more:

Don't forget that part of your Science grade for this period will be your experiment and use of the Scientific Method.

For those who still don't understand the scientific method very well, here is some information in Spanish to help you do your work:

Also visit this site, you may find interesting information:

And this one is excellent:

Good luck and enjoy this activity!
