PET Recycling (Polyethylene terephthalate)

Why is recycling so important? Watch "Plastic Planet" What do you think?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73sGgmZoMBQ

From February 4th. to the 10th. we will be collecting PET bottles from our homes, school, the street, or anywhere where we find them as waste product. In class we have talked about all the effects these bottles and other things made of plastic have caused to our environment.

Here is the link to the video we watched in class, and which shows us how much damage these waste products can cause on animals. Chris Jordan, a photographer, gathered evidence through his video "Midway", to warn us about the dangers of throwing trash to the environment. Click on his name to learn more about him and his work.

The idea of recycling is very old, there is historical evidence that people have been recycling various materials for thousands of years.

Recycling means to turn used or waste products into new things. Through this process we reduce waste!

Different materials can be recycled, for example paper, plastic, glass, metal, textiles and electronic equipment.

Check the following web-pages for more information:

Learn how PET bottles are recycled by watching this video:

Science Investigation and Plastic Arts-Science Project

To help you find information for your investigation, I have updated the links to web pages and videos about ecosystems in this blog. Go to the January, 2012 files and click on the "Ecosystems" section. You will find everything you need to do your work. Remember you need to include information about:
1. Where is the ecosystem located?
2. What kind of weather does it have?
3. How much rain does it get?
4. What kind of plants can be found?
5. What types of animals live there?

When you have found all the information you need, you will compare it in class with your team's members so you work is as complete as possible.

You will need all this information to build a "diorama" in a shoebox. A diorama is a model, look at the picture:

Click on the links below for some ideas. You may cut out animals from magazines or draw them. We will use recycled materials so take a look at things you can find at home. We already have some material in the classroom, like newspaper and magazines.

and...

Keep in mind that you will have to share the work so everyone participates. Probably one person can prepare the box decorations, the other three members can make animals, plants, and rocks, water, soil and other nonliving things. Cooperation is very important to get the best results!

Here are more examples:

Use your imagination, there are lots of materials at home which you can use. Each team needs to get a shoebox or a similar box, and any other things like glue, markers, scissors, colors, paint, brushes, color paper, sticks, sea shells, little rocks, tree branches, pasta, dry leaves, etc.

Enjoy your work and have fun!

What is weather?

To help you understand what weather is, here is a link with games and activities so you get a wider idea of what weather is about. Remember that weather is an important part of every ecosystem.

Check the link below and investigate about different topics related to weather such as hurricanes, thunderstorms, clouds, tornadoes, temperature, etc.

Click on the "Climate" section of this page. It contains a lot of interesting information which you will use to answer some questions.

Create a Character

You need to complete your Power Point Presentation about a character you create. Remember, your presentation must include the following:

1. Name of Character:

2. Describe the character’s physical appearance.
(Describe hair, eyes, skin, clothes, unusual features, and anything else that makes the character unique.)

3. Describe the character’s personality.
(Does she have a sense of humor? Is she serious? Is she kind? Does she have strong feelings about anything?)

4. Describe the way the character speaks.
(Does he speak in an unusual way? Does he speak at a fast or slow pace? Does he listen to others?)

5. List the different roles the character plays in the lives of the people around him.
(Is the character a son, daughter, husband, wife, best friend, policeman, teacher, etc.?)

Check the following link with information about what a character is:

When you are done with your character, go to the next link and follow the steps to create your story. Now it is your opportunity to put your character in action!

You are going to play a game in which you need to write a story and draw your characters. Then your story will be published. It may be about "adventure", "fantasy", or "science fiction". Try doing it in class. You will have to finish it at home and print it.

Reading Time!

Just wanted to remind you that it is very important that you  read at least 10 minutes in a loud voice, every day. For those who doesn't have books to read in English at home, here is a link to a nice story. Read it aloud please! In the same site, you will be able to find other stories. I hope you like it.
